A “Miss You” Card Gone Wrong
I had the pleasure of seeing the woman behind the bag: Unknown Mami, a hilarious writer from San Francisco, who does not reveal her identity online. We sat next to each other on a bus ride in Miami when we both were invited to Que Rica Vida’s relaunch.
The the promise that I would keep her identity a secret, she did this video essay for the Tiki Tiki. It’s a story about what happens when your mostly Spanish-speaking mother buys you a “Miss You” card in English.
Watch and enjoy. And then go read her blog.
Un poquito mas:

You look great!!!
:) I knew you wouldn’t reveal your image….:))
I love the card….Whoah!!!! LOL!

your mom sounds incredibly sweet. I like that even after you mentioned the gaffe she didn’t let it embarrass her but rather said what she meant about loving you. :-)
P.S. You really need to get out in the sun more. you are almost transparent ;-)
Aw, I guessed we weren’t going to see your face but it was still nice to hear your voice. I have to say that I may well have sent a similar card to one of my daughters! Maybe it’s generational thing. I hear the words but I read something different into them. Your Mum sounds great. She cares, and that’s a wonderful thing.

You put a smile in my face!! thanks, that was funny! I can relate to your mom, when you say sometimes she don’t get the jokes, I don’t get all jokes either, Spanish is and always be my first language and I’ve experienced “lost in translation” situations as well.

Aww. So cute. I think it’s great that you told her and great that she focused on the meaning that she wanted to convey to you. Funny story.

What a funny story! (I KNEW you weren’t going to show your face, and yet I was still couldn’t help but hope…)
Very nice story. My mother who is blind and not fluent in English as well, often has someone buy her a Valentines, Mother’s Day or Bdy card. At times she has bought a Simpathy Card for us.
Funny story!
(And I saw her too, Ana. High five! LOL.)
[...] I’m vlogging! When I was in Miami, Carrie, one of the lovely writers of Tiki Tiki asked me to tell a story about my mother on camera. Perhaps, it was the heat or giddy atmosphere, but she didn’t have to twist my arm for very long. Today, she has posted the video and I would love it if you would go check it out, give Tiki Tiki some love, and let me know what you think. Click here to see the video! [...]
