Mingling in Miami

Marta and I have been in Miami for a few days to attend Blogalicious, a wonderful blogging and social media conference. The event ended yesterday and it really was helpful, inspirational and professionally fabulous. We really can’t say enough good things about this conference, its founders, Ny, Stacey and Nadia, and the creative and beautiful range of attendees. (I’ll be making a list for you to follow soon!)

Not only did we get to hang out and meet people whose sites we read regularly, but we got to be together — which is a rare thing for us who have many miles between our homes in Nashville and Southern California. Skype just isn’t always enough.

El Palacio

Last night, I took Marta to El Palacio de Los Jugos on Flagler. It was her first visit. She was very impressed by Florida avocados the size of VW Beetles and the bistec sandwich hit the spot for her. I, of course, had Cuatro Leches cake. (La dieta for La Diva de Dulce Leche starts tomorrow!)

Today, we’re hanging at the beach and talking business in between sips of tropical drinks. Life is good!

While we take a little time to recharge, we thought we’d show you a little of our weekend…

Del Alma: Turquoise, symbol of Compassion, Escape y el Mar Bello

I have dunked my body in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Moments of personal Bliss and “All is right with the World” that I look back to when I need a boost during the gray days of winter. A picture of me, reveling in the magical waters of Cuba many years ago, captures the joy I feel when I wrap myself in bright blue waters.

So, to my delight the calming, escapist color turquoise has been named The Color of 2010 by the interesting people of Pantone.

“It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky,” said Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”

Paradise. Compassion. Faith. Water. Sky. All wrapped up in one color, a color we can expect to see a lot more of in fashion and design.

Maybe this color prediction means little us on a daily basis, as we trudge through difficult and uncertain times.
But today, consider drinking in this color. Let it inspire you.

Maybe you need a momentary escape. Maybe you need to show compassion to yourself today; find new faith in the most important person — you.

Maybe turquoise — and all of its symbolism and promise — can be your talismán today.

My Fabulous Quinceañera: A $45,000 Pachanga

I did not have a Quinceañera. Pity me not. I was a reluctant queen then. Today, at 40-something, I am not. If I had it to do again, I would emerge from a giant, lighted purple orchid, like a fairy in a techno garden and my corte would bow to me and my blushing greatness. My portrait would have been done at Vizcaya.

But, this is not about my fantasy, it is about your princesa and her Sweet 15 — el dia that your gordita becomes a señorita.

The good people of Verizon Wireless are offering a blow-out pachanga for some lucky nena’s 15th birthday. The celebration, worth $45,000, includes an event planner, venue, catering for 200 guests and transportation plus a live performance by pop artist Pee Wee. The details, as shared by Verizon’s gente, who created two informational sites, My Fabulous 15 and Mis Fabulosos 15:

The first phase of the contest — which runs through August 16 — invites eligible teenagers from the Los Angeles, San Jose, Las Vegas, Denver and Kennewick, Wash. metro areas to enter the My Fabulous 15 contest by submitting a brief essay that answers these three questions:

1) What does winning a Quince mean to you?

2) How do you stay in touch with your friends?

3) What is your favorite subject and why?

The submissions may include financial, medical or other hardships faced by the teenager; his/her goals, dreams or plans in life; community involvement or personal service to benefit others; scholastic achievements and how winning the Grand Prize would change his/her life or the lives of others. The entries will be judged based on the compelling nature of the essay. (Check out the Rules & Regulations at My Fabulous 15.)

Twenty winners from each city will be selected by Verizon Wireless and the public will have an opportunity to vote August 22 through August 31 for the semi-finalist they feel most deserves the grand prize. The public can vote via text messaging or on the My Fabulous 15 website. The Grand Prize winner of the Quince party will be announced September 3. Five runners-up will receive a LG enV3 phone and Verizon Wireless gift card. The Grand Prize winner’s My Fabulous 15 party will be held October 3.

So, pass the word to young women — or young men — who want a rockin’ fiesta.

But, before we go, let’s look at some Quinceañeras and their big day.
