Divas of Dulce de Leche

So, it appears Sofia Vergara is trying to dethrone me as the Diva of Dulce de Leche. Descarada!
Thanks to Blanca, a loyal friend who wants to defend my title, I saw a video of Sofia on the Tonight Show pitching arequipe, a Colombian version of dulce de leche. It appears Gordon Ramsay did not like it. More for us.
Now, some background. If you didn’t know I have a very strong and deep love of dulce de leche, let me point you to my personal blog, Bilingual in the Boonies, where I keep a category on the subject.
I pretty much buy any general market food product with the words Dulce de Leche printed on it — from Pop Tarts to Jello. And, when I land in Miami, the first thing I do is head to Navarro and the corner bakery and fill up on the stuff.
A couple nights ago, I took my 6-year-old on a late evening trip to El Palacio de Los Jugos on Flagler Street in Miami and we shared a Cuatro Leches cake — tres leches topped with dulce de leche! It will take weeks to drop the weight I have gained during this Miami trip.
Take a look at these pictures and you’ll see why Miami is a dangerous place for me…dulce leche everywhere at.all.hours.of.the.day!
So, below is the video of the very funny and charming Vergara on the Tonight Show and below hers is the video pitch I did six months ago, begging some dulce de leche company to pick me, me, me! as their Spokes Diva of Dulce de Leche.
I’ve got just a few more days left here in the Homeland, so I am off to discover mas dulces.
And if Sofia wants to do a joint tour to pitch dulce leche and arequipe, my maletas estan ready.

Is it weird that I know exactly which bakery you’re at?

Perhaps you can clear up something that has been mystifying me for years now. In our Cuban-American home, we called sweetened condensed milk dulce de leche. It came in a can and we poured it into a glass dish and ate it with a spoon. What’s called dulce de leche now is different. Am I remembering wrong or did anyone else think dulce de leche came in a can with the Eagle brand logo?

Frances, dulce de leche is made from sweetened condensed milk — it has to be boiled in the can…Sounds like your family just gave it the dulce leche name…but then again, maybe someone else will agree with you….you know how the Cubans are — lots of versions for everything!
You are the diva’s to surpass all diva’s, dulce de leche needs you, don’t they know that?
I want to come visit you in Miami but I think you said you’ll be gone this winter. Let me know where you’ll be in case I end up travel writing in your neighborhood. No seriously!
Carrie you are the cutest! If I were a spokesperson it would definitely be for caldo de pollo, no brand in particular- just caldo de pollo. Although I do seem to excessively tweet about Yoplait 100cal yogurt :) xoxo Maya
I don’t know…between you and Sofia Vergara, I’m thinking they’ll go for for the actress…though your video was much better! Hold out for Tiffany!!!

I love Palacio de Jugos! I used to go there and sit at the picnic table while the cat waited for a bite. There is a really good bakery just a little bit west of there on Flagler.

Gordon Ramsay can be such an ass, right? LOL I love how Jay Leno told him it was perfect for the English since they wouldn’t need teeth for it!!! Hilarious…
And we need to start your campaign!!
