It is possible that as many as a third of the 9 million residents of Haiti need aid in the aftermath of the 7.0 earthquake that hit the poor Caribbean nation and neighbor to the Dominican Republic.

From the Associated Press:

Aftershocks continued to rattle the capital of 2 million people as women covered in dust clawed out of debris, wailing. Stunned people wandered the streets holding hands. Thousands gathered in public squares to sing hymns.

People pulled bodies from collapsed homes, covering them with sheets by the side of the road. Passersby lifted the sheets to see if loved ones were underneath. Outside a crumbled building the bodies of five children and three adults lay in a pile.

The world is rallying to help, and donations for goods, medicine and rebuilding are desperately needed. We have compiled information to help you decide how you too can help.

A list of organizations receiving donations for Haiti can be found here and below here are some outlined, more specifically:

Yéle Haiti, a 4-year-old non-profit started by singer Wyclef Jean to aid his nation, also has put out a call for help and donations. The organization is making it possible for you to give by simply texting “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 via your cell phone bill.

The U.S. State Department web site says you can donate $10 by texting “HAITI” to “90999.” The $10 donation will be given to the Red Cross and will be charged to your cell phone bill.

Donations also can be sent to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which provides relief, supplies and assistance to those in need. The donations can be sent to: American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013; by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS; or for Spanish speakers, 1-800-257-7575; or online at the Red Cross site.

World Vision, is a Christian humanitarian organization that works with children, their families and communities. You can find them here.

Doctors Without Borders, which sends physicians and medical personnel to countries around the world, had teams in Haiti yesterday during the quake. You can donate directly on their Web site. To view current and past information  and video about Doctors Without Borders work in Haiti click here.
