Latin Mamis and the Pursuit of Suenos
Because everybody loves a tough Latin mami story, here’s a profile in the New York Times about the life of Celina Baez, the Puerto Rican immigrant whose daughter, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, is a nominee for the Supreme Court.
“As a schoolgirl, Celina Baez told friends, she and her four siblings had only one pencil to share; it was guarded by her parents and doled out carefully. She memorized her lessons by pretending to teach them to the trees behind her modest home, assigning a pupil’s name to each one and wielding a stick as a pointer.”

Another Latin mami, Thalia, returns to the tele to host a children’s show, Las aventuras de eebee, on V-me. The show, based on a children’s product line, is scheduled for the 2009-2010 season. From HispanicAd.com: “Las aventuras de eebee, features superstar mom Thalia as she interacts with eebee – “the baby’s baby” – in entertaining vignettes that help parents of infants aged 6 months and up transform everyday moments into learning that lasts.”
We guess some Latin papis will hang around to watch that show too, for the baby’s sake, you know.

And guess who is getting even more Gigantic? Si, El Nuevo Sabado Gigante. Mas Don Francisco. Ay! Univision also recently announced it is launching “Viva el Sueño!’‘ — a competition among Latino singers desireous of fame, fortuna y gloria. Thirteen weeks of “ay, ay, a-yay!” Que rico. Maybe. Viewers will get to determine the winner. Wonder if we will meet the Latina Susan Boyle?
