My Love of Cheesy Latino Entertainment
My parents are obsessed with telenovelas; they have chunks of time in the evenings blocked off so they won’t be disturbed. Even I can’t disrupt them with a cute hello from their nietas. However, I unlike my parents and the lovely Violeta, could care less about them. I was addicted to Mari Mari and that was about it. And don’t get me started on Sabado Gigante; how my mother watches that show every Saturday is beyond me!
Don’t think, though, I don’t like to support Latinos in the entertainment industry. Au contraire, I am the biggest supporter of Latino entertainment, good or bad. Everyone always boasts about the latest Almodovar flick they’ve seen or whatever hot Latino indie flick is out and I’m no differnt. But I’m here to say I don’t discriminate. I’ll watch the worst of the worst…I take that back, I haven’t seen Chasing Papi but it’s only a matter of time I’m sure. My husband thinks it’s ridiculous; he says I really have no standards when it comes to Latino movies and television. I tell him I’m just trying to be supportive.
Take for instance the great pleasure I got out of watching VH1′s Viva Hollywood. How could I not watch, Walter Mercado himself was on the show! I even called up my mami to make sure she tuned in. Bravo has a new television series coming out, Miami Social, which although not targeted at Latinos, I’m sure it will have it’s heavy dose of Cubans. So, yes, I’ll be tuning in. Most recently, I lifted my ban on Lifetime television to watch Maria Conchita in Maneater. My husband knew it was all down hill when I made him watch the critically acclaimed Bandidas. He only mildly complained, considering there were two hot chicks on screen.
I really do love watching Latinos on TV or the big screen. As cheesy as some of the shows and movies I’ve mentioned, I’ve enjoyed them all. I might be watching too much TV, though, because the other day I thought I had the most brilliant idea for a television series. If any producers are reading, I’ll let you in on a little secret. The next big hit: The Real Cuban Housewives of New Jersey followed by a season two in lovely Miami. You don’t know what you’re missing!
Do you have any favorite flicks or shows I should be tuning into? Or a secret guilty pleasure? Definitely share, I’m always ready and willing to support a Latino artist!

I’m like you. I love supporting Latino entertainment. No matter how bad it is.
;)
I figure the more we support the more money future projects will get.
